How to make your web design work for you:

Keys to great web design:

If you live anywhere from Calgary to New Brunswick, or Texas to California there are some general keys to great web design.  Here we will discuss some things every person should know before attempting to update their web design.

Pick a colour theme.  – Yes, colours are nice.  We like them too.  But while your favourite colours might be many, the more you limit your colours, the more you will stand out.  Think of it this way, the fewer colours you pick, the more people will remember you by them.  And we all want to be remembered.

3D and Flash effects used sparingly – Flash animation can be a great tool.  A short flash video or animation, or 3D item can grab someone’s attention and get them excited about your company.  But never confuse “excitement” with “seizures”.  If users need a doctor’s note to access your site, you can be certain they won’t stay on the site for long.

On the other hand, the right amount of flash will help a user remember your site, AND visit again. Jackpot!

White Space – White Space is what makes your graphics possible.  It doesn’t have to be white… it’s just what graphics exist on.  Like we said, you have white space to thank for the ability to show graphics.  What’s the best way to thank that white space?… by letting some of it exist!  This is your own site, not the Calgary Yellow Pages, don’t overcrowd the space.  Remember what we talked about with colours? Less is more.

Visible links – Sometimes people get so caught up in making their web design look smooth and seamless they end up hiding their links.

Usability – as pretty as the new web design might make your website look, if the average user can’t get into it easily you run the risk of losing them.  Of course you want your site to look pretty, but remember simplicity is also key.

Show yourself – Why did you make a website?  To show off who you are and what you offer.  Sooooo show off who you are and what you offer!  The sleekest web design can fall flat if it doesn’t represent your products or your appropriate demographic.  Make sure that someone who doesn’t know anything about your company can find out quickly when they enter your site. Otherwise you could end up with traffic that leaves your site before even finding out who you are.  Tragic.

These are just some pointers, of course.  Great web presence is best achieved under the direction of a talented web design team.  Here at Commerx we have web designers that can meet with you right here in Calgary, or over the phone anywhere in the world…  We will work with you to ensure your web site is perfect.

How to Sell Your Ideas to others

Sometimes we think that all we have to do to sell our ideas is to present it logically and articulately. While it is of course important to present the case with simplicity and clarity, there are several more important elements to keep in mind when preparing an idea for presentation.

• Relationships are more important tan the best sales tactic. If you are presenting a new idea within your company but you have alienated yourself from your coworkers you will have more difficulty convincing them to take a look at your idea.

• Identify with those you want to sell the idea to. All parties involved have motivations and identifying what they are will help you understand the others in the room. You know your idea is good, but you have to convince the others that it means something to them.

• Ask questions. If you ask for input from those you want to sell the idea too they will feel included in the process and therefore be more likely to see the value of the proposal.
