Psychology of SEO

Your site traffic is low…how does that make you feel?

Psychology of SEO seems to be the buzzword these days, but what does it even mean? In fact, is it wise to combine two terms that many people are afraid of?

You’re right: mention Psychology and people are afraid you will read their minds or want to talk about their childhood.  Mention SEO and people think you’re trying to buy links and trick search engines into putting an undeserving site at the top of the page.

Clearly both are misunderstood disciplines, but what else do they have in common?

First, let’s explore what Search Engine Optimization is.

Search engines aim to connect users with the websites that are most relevant to them.  So if you give search engines the right key phrases, more potential consumers will be directed to your site when they are looking for something you offer. Similarly, the more user-friendly you make your site, the more likely search engines will be to put higher on their list for people to see.  But it seems like we left something important out: the users. The easier your site is to navigate, the more likely your users are to find what they are looking for, and they are more likely to stay on the site for longer.

So it becomes a cyclical effect. The higher search engines rank you, the easier searchers will find you.  The easier it is for them to find you, the more likely they are to visit your site.  The easier your site is to navigate, the more likely they are to stay there and to use it again.  The more that people use your site, and the longer they stay there, the higher search engines will rank it.  The higher search engines rank your site, the more likely searchers are to find you… and so the cycle begins again.

Manufacturing industries have begun to employ consultants with a background in psychology to help them manufacture products that are innately easier to use.  This directly translates to search engine marketing.

Well that makes sense doesn’t it?  People use search engines; Psychology studies people. And the more we study people, the more information we will have when we’re trying to build a site that will be most useful to them!  So a psychological or social science approach to the evaluation of a site reviews what target consumers respond to and determines how to target them more effectively.  This will lead to a site that is easier to understand.

See… it’s not that complicated.  Your childhood on the other hand…

Goal Setting

How should you phrase your goals? Goals must be S.M.A.R.T. – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Trackable to a Timetable. Let’s look at each of these elements in detail.

Goals must be specific. “Happiness” or “success” are too vague. Ask yourself: what exactly do I want to do, be or have?

Is your goal measurable? How will you know you obtained your goal?

Is it attainable? Give yourself a chance to succeed. Take little steps and succeed. Success breeds success.

Is it relevant? Would the attainment of the goal be worthwhile to you? Before you can answer this question you need to know what kind of life you want.

Is there a way of tracking your performance on a timetable? How do you know you are getting closer to your goal? Select dates when you will measure your progress against the milestones in your plan. You will either re-affirm that you are on track or make adjustments
